Which Freezbone is right for my dog? A size guide by weight and chewing style

Every Freezbone matched to your dog's weight in kg and the way they chew, plus when to go a size up.

Several Freezbone toys being filled side by side

Buying a chew toy online is a bit like buying shoes for someone else. Too small, and a strong dog chews the toy instead of licking the filling out of it. Too big, and a little dog cannot get their tongue far enough inside to bother. This size guide matches every Freezbone in our UK range to your dog's weight in kilograms and the way they chew, using the sizes listed on our product pages, so you can get it right first time.

Weigh your dog, decide whether they are a licker, a moderate chewer or a tough chewer, then use the table below. Dogs under 5 kg start with the Freezball S. Tough chewers should look at the Freezbox, Freez Doughnut, Freezstick, FreezStar, FreezCone or FreezJumbo. If your dog sits near the top of a weight range or chews hard, size up.

How do I know what size chew toy my dog needs?

Two things decide it: how much your dog weighs and how they use their mouth. Breed is only a rough guide, because two dogs of the same breed can be very different sizes and very different chewers.

For weight, the bathroom scales trick works for most dogs: weigh yourself holding them, then on your own, and take one from the other. For the mouth, use common sense. A chew toy should never be small enough to fit completely inside your dog's mouth.

Is my dog a licker, a moderate chewer or a tough chewer?

Watch your dog with a toy they already own for a few minutes. Most dogs fall clearly into one camp.

Licker

  • Works patiently at the filling with their tongue
  • Rarely bites down on the toy itself
  • Suits shapes with grooves and swirls that slow licking down

Moderate chewer

  • Licks first, then has a good gnaw once the food gets hard to reach
  • Leaves toys looking a bit loved but intact
  • The Freezball is made for this kind of dog

Tough chewer

  • Goes straight for the rubber
  • Has destroyed soft or thin toys in minutes
  • Needs a toy made for tough or power chewers, sized generously

Not sure yet?

  • Puppies and new rescues often change as they settle in
  • Start one size up and supervise the first few sessions
  • If they start working on the toy itself, move to a tougher design

Which Freezbone fits my dog's weight?

Here is the whole UK range by weight band. Toys listed as suiting dogs "up to 60 kg" or "up to 64 kg" work for smaller dogs too; they sit in the bottom row because they are the ones that stretch to the biggest dogs.

Every size above comes from our product pages. The Freezball runs from S (60 ml, under 5 kg) to XL (350 ml, up to 40 kg), and the Freezbox holds 350 ml for dogs up to 65 kg. The FreezJumbo comes in Large (420 ml) and XXL (700 ml), so it can stand in for a food bowl. The FreezCup is compact, ideal for small and medium dogs while still roomy enough for bigger ones.

Which Freezbone is best for a tough chewer?

If your dog has form for shredding toys, start with the designs made for strong jaws:

  • Freezbox: our most rugged toy, in ultra-durable natural rubber, 100 mm across and holding up to 350 ml. Made for medium to large dogs up to 65 kg.
  • Freez Doughnut: built for power chewers, but sized for smaller dogs, from 5 to 20 kg.
  • Freezstick: made for tough chewers, small for dogs up to 27 kg and large for dogs up to 64 kg.
  • FreezStar: designed for power chewers, for dogs up to 64 kg.
  • FreezCone: designed for tough chewers, with a spiral groove inside and room for 350 ml.
  • FreezJumbo: our largest, with extra-thick walls, for big dogs and aggressive chewers.

No toy is truly indestructible, so supervise and pick the toy up once it is empty. Our guide to what aggressive chewers actually need goes into more detail, and if you have a strong-jawed terrier, see our best chew toys for Staffies.

When should I size up?

When in doubt, go bigger. A toy that is slightly too large is a minor inconvenience; one that is too small is the one that fails. Size up if:

  • Your dog sits at the top of a weight range
  • They are a tough chewer, whatever the scales say
  • The toy can disappear completely into their mouth
  • They are a puppy who is still growing fast
  • They empty their current toy in a few minutes flat
  • You have two dogs and the bigger one tends to "borrow" the smaller one's toy

Do I want a snack-sized or a meal-sized toy?

Capacity matters as much as weight. Smaller toys suit a quick treat when you get home; bigger ones can hold part of, or all of, a meal.

Size of jobToys and capacities
A small treatFreezball S (60 ml), Freez Doughnut S (80 ml)
A decent snackFreezball M (120 ml), Freez Doughnut L (120 ml), Freezflower Cup S (180 ml)
Part of a mealFreezball L (250 ml), Freezflower Cup L (320 ml)
A proper mealFreezball XL (350 ml), Freezbox (350 ml), FreezCone (350 ml), FreezJumbo (420 ml, or 700 ml in the XXL)

Whatever goes in, count it as part of your dog's daily food. For fill ideas sized to every toy, watch the Freezbone recipe videos.

What size Freezbone for a puppy?

Choose for your puppy's weight today, not the dog they will be in a year, and expect to buy the next size as they grow. Use soft, simple fills, let the toy soften for a few minutes so it is not rock hard on young teeth, and supervise every session. If your puppy is a medium or large breed, a toy with a wide weight range, such as the FreezSwirl, will last them longer.

Still torn between two?

Pick the bigger one, or pick one of each shape and see which your dog prefers. Plenty of dogs have a favourite, and plenty of owners end up with a freezer drawer full of them. For breed-specific picks, our chew toy guide for Cocker and Springer Spaniels shows how the sizes work for a medium, mouthy dog.

Frequently asked questions

  • The Freezball S suits dogs under 5 kg and holds 60 ml; the M suits dogs up to 10 kg and holds 120 ml. The L holds 250 ml for dogs up to 25 kg, and the XL holds 350 ml for dogs up to 40 kg. The Freezball is made for moderate chewers.

  • For dogs over 40 kg, look at the large Freezstick, FreezStar, FreezWheel and FreezLava, which suit dogs up to 64 kg, and the FreezHeart, which suits dogs up to 60 kg. Big, hungry dogs who chew hard may prefer the FreezJumbo, our largest design.

  • For dogs under 5 kg, start with the Freezball S. Between 5 and 10 kg, the Freezball M, Freezflower Cup S and Freez Doughnut S all fit, with the Doughnut being the choice for small dogs who chew hard.

  • Choose a toy made for tough or power chewers in thick natural rubber, sized up. Our toughest are the Freezbox, Freez Doughnut, Freezstick, FreezStar, FreezCone and FreezJumbo. No toy is indestructible, so always supervise.

  • If you are unsure, go bigger. A toy that is too small can be chewed apart or fit completely in your dog's mouth, while one a little too big is simply a longer job.

  • It depends on the toy: from 60 ml in the Freezball S to 350 ml in the Freezball XL, Freezbox and FreezCone. The FreezJumbo is our biggest, at up to 700 ml in the XXL, and can replace a food bowl.
